Meditate yourself to good mental health
Every time I meet someone who tells me they are suffering from depression, I ask them what they’re doing to help alleviate the symptoms. Usually they just tell me the name of the medication they’re taking and I have to repeat the question; what are they doing to help alleviate the symptoms?
There are lots of things that people with depression and anxiety can do to help themselves. Taking medication is an important part of the process, of course, and I would never recommend that anyone stopped their meds and relied entirely on natural methods, but as complementary treatments, exercise, a healthy diet and even meditation all have their place in helping someone cope with mental illness.
When I was first diagnosed with depression, I took a look at my life and how I could improve things myself. One of the first things I noticed was how poor my diet was; so I took to using blenders to make fresh fruit smoothies every day to take to work. I also made sure I exercised every day, even if it was just a short swim or a walk in the fresh air. However, the best tool that I found to help me feel in a brighter and better mood was meditation.
I started by going to a couple of classes – I’d never meditated before so had no idea what to expect! In fact, it reminded me a lot of being hypnotised, but with more control over your external environment. It’s basically a deep breathing technique that allows you to calm and quiet your mind; meaning that when you “wake” all your tense and anxious feelings are gone. It’s like a miracle cure that, unfortunately, only lasts for a few hours. If pharmaceutical companies could bottle the effects of an hour’s meditation, then the whole world would be a much happier place.
